Desgining a Stationery Collection on Inclusion & Diversity

May 22, 2025

When I got in touch with Studio Paper, a bi-monthly stationery subscription box, about a collaboration opportunity, I couldn't contain my excitement. As an illustrator, the chance to design my own stationery was a dream come true. Little did I know that this project would become much more than just creating pretty designs – it would become a powerful journey of storytelling, mental health advocacy, and promoting inclusivity.

The theme of the "Ontmoetings Box" was centered around mental health and inclusion, topics that are close to my heart. I saw this as an opportunity to weave stories through intricate illustrations, ones that would resonate with people from all walks of life. I wanted to create an experience where each piece of stationery told its own tale, forming a larger narrative when brought together.

One of the highlights of this collaboration was designing a panorama illustration, consisting of five different A5 posters that could be used as separate posters or assembled to form a breathtaking panoramic scene. The back had a postcard format, so it could also be used to send as a card. It was an exciting challenge to ensure that each card stood on its own while fitting seamlessly into the bigger picture.

Diversity and inclusion were at the core of my artistic vision. I wanted to represent as many unique perspectives as possible in everyday scenes. For instance, on the bag, I included a powerful illustration of a woman with a guide dog, showcasing the strength and independence of those with visual impairments.

Throughout the illustrations, I endeavored to depict families with different dynamics and backgrounds. A family with two kids, one in a wheelchair, and varying skin tones was featured, showcasing the beauty of diversity in family structures. Perhaps one of the children was adopted or from a previous relationship – leaving room for the viewers' imagination and personal resonation.

The journey of creating this stationery box was both challenging and fulfilling. It pushed me to think deeply about how to visually convey important themes of mental health and inclusivity. I wanted to use my art to inspire conversations and promote empathy, while also leaving space for individual interpretation and connection.

Seeing the final product brought immense joy and a sense of accomplishment. I knew that the "Ontmoetings Box" would not only offer beautiful stationery but also foster conversations about mental health and celebrate the strength found in diversity.

This collaboration with Studio Paper has been an unforgettable experience. It has reinforced my belief in the significance of art as a tool for positive change and advocacy. I am grateful for the opportunity to have shared my passion for storytelling and inclusivity through this stationery box, and I hope it will continue to inspire conversations and touch the hearts of many.
